A little background on the people behind the company
Kim Mack and Staci Douglas are two sisters who were born in Brookyn and raised in the projects of East New York. Their mother raised them to be individuals and think independently. She was always reminding her girls to “be leaders not followers”. Kim and Staci were always encouraged to be true to themselves and stay slightly outside the "norm". It was a valuable lesson. Teaching them to be comfortable in their own skin and not to be afraid to try new things.
Kim and Staci were raising their families in New Jersey and just got sick and tired of the high cost of living, which made it difficult for them to pursue their dream of building a family business. They sold their houses, packed up their children and moved to North Carolina. "We knew if we wanted to work for ourselves we had to reduce our overhead in a big way", says Staci. So now you will find two inner city girls raising raising their families in rural North Carolina trying to grab a piece of the American Dream.
The Idea
Staci had this dirty, broken promotional laynard dangling out of her closed purse. Kim in her usual charming way asked her "what the heck is that filthy thing hangin outta your bag?". Staci grabbed hold of the laynard and pulled her keys out from her bag. "Look I never have to dig around my bag looking for my keys any more", said Staci. It was in that moment that the idea for Charming KEYper™ was born.
Why this?
Kim and Staci have six children between them ranging in ages from 20 to 9. As a young mother Kim got a first hand lesson in the value of being able to put your hands on your keys the moment you need them. "I was leaving a mall with my children. As many mothers of young children can relate, I had a stroller, diaper bag, purse and shopping bags. I noticed a suspicious car driving around the parking lot. As the car was approaching, I was desparate to get my children secured safely in our car." Kim never forgot the panick she felt that day digging around trying to find her keys. "I knew I could not be the only woman that suffered from this problem of diggning around my purse for my keys or worse yet, resorting to dumping my purse out trying to locate my keys." Kim searched and searched trying to find a product that solved her problem. Necessity is the mother of invention.
Creating Charming KEYper™
Staci's laynard dangling out of the bag was the perfect solution, but it needed some styling. Kim and Staci set out researching and experimenting with different materials and designs. Once the design and materials were finalized, they had to tackle production, equipment and packaging. They enlisted friends, family and associates to test market their new key finder invention. The feedback was so positive, they knew they had a hit. Kim began cold calling on local gift shops, card stores, and boutiques where she received many wholesale orders. Charming KEYper™ was introduced in late 2009. To date more than 12,000 units have been sold. Kim and Staci are proof that with hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything no matter where you strart from.
